What is a Deep Cleaning, and How Can it Help Me?

March 25, 2018

"Deep Dental Cleaning", technically known as scaling and root planing, is a therapeutic dental procedure which can help reduce and treat gum disease.  Your dentist may recommend this procedure if you are experiencing symptoms such as swollen inflamed gums, bleeding gums, or periodontal pocketing.

Millions of Americans have some form of gum disease, which is the leading cause of adult tooth loss.  At A+ Dental, Dr. Babaloui says “We have seen that a surprising number of patients come into the office with bleeding gums, and 4-6mm gum tissue pockets.  With these patients, the main objective is to reverse the progress of gum disease in order to save the natural teeth”.

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is a bacterial infection which produces a destructive process.  Gums become reddened and inflamed, bleeding easily.  As the disease progresses, the bone tissue around the teeth becomes diseased and begins to erode.  Gum tissue becomes loose as deep pockets form.  As bone and gum tissue is lost, teeth become loose and are eventually lost.

Periodontal Bacteria and Systemic Disease

Periodontal infection is of serious concern to dentists like Dr. Babaloui because the damage is not limited to the teeth and gums.  Research points to gum disease causing bacteria as a factor in serious systemic health conditions such as coronary artery disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and even stroke.

Reversing and Treating Gum Disease

Dr. Babloui recommends treating gum disease with a targeted approach.  Depending on the degree of infection, different treatment methods are used to eliminate the destructive bacteria and restore a healthy mouth.  Specialized dental cleaning procedures, commonly referred to as "deep cleaning" reach the bacteria harbored in the periodontal pockets. Oral antibiotics are often used in conjunction with other treatments. A deep cleaning procedure called SRP can help eliminate bacteria that hide beneath the gum line.  A targeted antibiotic treatment may also be applied directly to the surface of the affected tooth roots, treating the gum infection where it lives.  Treatment for gum disease is the only way to get rid of it, but the results are only effective and long lasting when the patient takes an active role in eliminating the disease.  At home dental care is important to the treatment of gum disease.  Brushing and flossing every day will help, but sometimes a special instrument such as a water pik or other specialized dental cleaning tool is recommended for use at home.

When intervention occurs before serious damage is done, gum disease bacteria can be reduced or eliminated, stopping the progression of the disease and preventing tooth loss.  The best way to prevent tooth loss from periodontal disease is to practice good dental hygiene and see your Carrollton dentist regularly for a check-up, which includes a careful look at your gum health.
